What is Testicular Torsion?

Testicular torsion or testicular twisting is caused when the spermatic cord in the testicle twists and stops blood flow to the testicle. The testicles hang loose in the scrotum and in rare cases that they are twisted the channel with the blood vessels is tightened. This affects the blood flow to the testicles.Testicular torsion is most common in boys and young adults.Mostly appearing in young boys and girls, testicular torsion rarely happens to men in their 30s too.

Testicular torsion is an urgent that needs immediate medical care.If you face mild pain in the testicle or persistent discomfort then you must call for prompt medical care.Testicular torsion should be differentiated from other testicle pains because delay in its treatment can lead to sever damage.

Testicular Torsion Symptoms

The symptoms of testicular torsion occur rapidly though they may differ from person to person. While some boys or men only feel swelling and pain others can witness headache, nausea or blood in the semen.Irrespective of the severity, all symptoms pose a threat of permanent damage and immediate care is a must.Common

symptoms of testicular torsion:

•  Abnormal position of a testicle

•  Excruciating pain

•  Feeling lightheaded

•  Groin or pelvic pain

•  Nausea with or without vomiting

•  Swelling on one side of the scrotu

Testicular torsion develops when the spermatic cord within a testicle becomes twisted around the blood vessels in the testicle and scrotum, thereby cutting off the blood supply and potentially causing irreversible damage.

Testicular torsion develops when the spermatic cord within a testicle becomes twisted around the veins in the testicle and nut sack, thereby cutting off the blood supply and potentially causing irreversible damage.

Testicular Torsion Causes:

Testicular torsion occurs when a testicle rotates on the spermatic cord, which provides blood flow to the testicle. As a result the flow of blood is stopped due to which one can suffer severe pain and swelling. If the pain is not taken care of on time,it can lead to permanent damage like loosing a testicle.

Testicular Torsion Diagnosis:

If the testicular pain is severe and unbearable then immediate tests must be undertaken.X-ray test can be used for examinations for those individuals whose history and symptoms can not be characterized. In general for normal detection,a doppler ultrasound is effective. But cases with a strong history and physical evidence calls for immediate surgical detorsion to avoid chances of losing a testicle.

Testicular Torsion Treatment:
Due to severity, treatment of testicular torsion often involves a surgery.Depending on the condition,a surgery can also be done immediately. If done within six to seven hours, surgery can help in saving testicles. The aim of the surgery is to regain the blood circulation to the testicles that was affected due to tightened blood vessels causes by testicular torsion.Surgery proves to be a pain reliever in most of the cases.During the surgery, the detected twisted region is operated at.Spermatic tube that was affected is disentangled and then the testicle is stitched to the wall of scrotum. This lowers the recurrence of this syndrome. But a important step that surgeons keep in mind during the operation is covering the non affected testicle area.In the absence of such step, the unaffected testicle can develop testicle torsion in future.

Testicular Torsion Recovery:
After the surgery pain killer medicines, rest and ice packs will relieve pain and swelling.Rest at home and avoid any strenuous activity for almost 6 weeks. If the surgery is done within the time, there are higher chances of full recovery. If the surgery is done within 12 hours of beginning of the symptoms then there are 70% chances to save the testicles through a surgery. But in case a testicle has to be removed, another healthy testicle can provide the enough hormones for normal male growth.

Testicular Torsion Complications:
If untreated then testicular torsion can lead to sever complications.Complications of testicular torsion can include:
•  Atrophy of the affected testicle
•  Infertility
•  Testicle removal
To avoid these damages and minimize the risk of serious complications, following the recommended treatment plan will save you.
Torsion of a Testicular Appendage:
For young boys aged between 7to 14,this is a common cause of pain in the testicles. This situation can cause to serious nut sack.Appendix Testis and Appendix Epididymis are two such appendages. The former can be found in 92% of all testicles and the later,in 23% of testes.Acute inflammation and pain in the scrotum is frequently linked to this situation.Torsion of a testicular appendage is a benign condition.
